It's Friday night at 7:30, but rather than heading to the pub or watching a film, I've taken a train to a market town in the countryside to join local helpers from a toad patrol. These dedicated individuals sacrifice their nights to protect the native amphibian community.

An Alarming Drop in Population

The Bufo bufo is becoming increasingly rare. A latest research led by an amphibian and reptile charity showed that the British common toad numbers have almost halved since 1985. Observing a species that has been a stalwart of the UK landscape in decline is labeled "concerning" by researchers. Toads "don't require very specific conditions" and "should be able to live successfully in the majority of habitats in Britain," so if even they are struggling to persist, "it kind of suggests that things are not as they should be."

The Threat from Traffic

Though the study didn't cover the reasons for the decline, cars certainly plays a part. Calculations suggest that 20 tons of toads are killed on British roads every year – that is, several hundred thousand. In contrast to frogs, which might be content to mate "with just a small container," toads favor big bodies of water. Their ability to remain away from water for more time than frogs means they can travel further to find them – sometimes hundreds of metres. They usually follow their ancestral migration routes – it's common for mature amphibians to go back to their natal pond to mate.

Toad Patrols Across the United Kingdom

Finding many of dead toads on nearby streets "resonates deeply with people," and has led to the formation of rescue teams throughout the UK – hundreds of organizations are currently registered with a national initiative. These groups collect toads and carry them over streets in buckets, as well as recording the number of toads they find and lobbying for other protection measures, such as blocked roads and underground wildlife tunnels.

Volunteers tend to operate during the migration season, when toad crossings are frequent. However, this implies they can miss groups of young toads, which, having been spawn and then tadpoles, exit their ponds over an unpredictable schedule in the end of summer. The mother and son joined the patrol a year and a half ago. The teenager loves all things nature-related and has an goal to become a conservationist, so his mother started to search for activities they could do jointly to protect local wildlife. Now she loves it as much as he does, the middle-aged small business owner tells me – so when the group was seeking a new manager recently, she decided to step up.

The teenager, too, has been instrumental in the organization. A video he created, imploring the local council to close a road through a nature reserve during breeding time, influenced the outcome the group's way. After a twelve months of lobbying, the authority approved an "restricted access" restriction between evening and morning from February through to April. Most drivers respected and avoided the road.

Additional Species and Challenges

A few vehicles go by when I'm out on patrol and we discover some casualties as a consequence – no toads, but three squashed newts. Milder winters also cause toads to emerge from their hibernation more often, interfering with the energy conservation vital to their life cycle.
