Why Los Blancos Have 'Total Trust' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
Whenever a teenage creates club a historic moment in a pivotal European tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.
In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 round of 16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final berth.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica
The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.
He joined Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.
Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'
In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and awarded him playing time in pre-season.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his career as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, every day you head to training and each day you have a game," stated the player after his debut.
"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.
Pitarch has taken it with performances that have defied his age and experience.
"He's a very quick player, and you can observe his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His greatest quality is his personality," continued he. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I realize people are astonished to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to do his normal game.
"He will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to have a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.
He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the option to play for both nations at senior international level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a official full international.
He has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are watching his progress with keen attention.
In a recent interview, the player said: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision soon."
His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for La Roja, Brahim decided to represent Morocco.
Focus on the Future
At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.
He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight tie with the German champions.
His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the team pursue trophies to come.
After his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the same. We handle it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I must earn my minutes on the field," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
