US Navy Commander to Inform Congress as Bipartisan Scrutiny Intensifies Over Maritime Engagement

A senior American naval admiral is scheduled to deliver a confidential update to congressional members monitoring the armed forces this Thursday, as they probe a US strike on a boat in the Caribbean Sea. The incident, which allegedly struck a craft carrying drugs, allegedly involved a follow-up strike that eliminated any remaining individuals.

White House Justifies Strikes as Defensive Measures

The administration spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, on Monday stated that the second strike was carried out “as a defensive action” and in compliance with regulations governing military engagement. Bipartisan scrutiny has mounted over a account that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth gave a verbal order in September to strike the boat.

Democrats have argued the claims, initially disclosed last week, could amount to a violation of international law, and GOP members have also voiced their concerns about the legality of the attack on 2 September. The Congressional armed services committees have initiated investigations into the recent series of US military strikes on vessels in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific Ocean.

“The Defense Secretary authorised the naval commander to execute these military actions,” stated Leavitt. “Adm Bradley worked well within his mandate and the legal framework, directing the operation to ensure the boat was destroyed and the threat to the United States of America was eliminated.”

In her remarks to reporters, Leavitt did not challenge the account that there were individuals who survived after the first attack. Her justification came after ex-President Donald Trump a day earlier said he “wouldn’t have wanted that – not a second strike” when questioned about the incident.

Mounting Congressional Concern and Internal Backing

Late on Monday, Hegseth posted: “Adm Mitch Bradley is an national hero, a true professional, and has my 100% support. I support him and the combat decisions he has made – on the September 2nd operation and all others since.”

A thirty days following the strike, Bradley was elevated from commander of Joint Special Operations Command to commander of USSOCOM.

Concern over the government’s armed actions against alleged narcotics-trafficking boats has been building in the legislature, but details of this subsequent attack stunned many lawmakers from across the aisle and sparked stark questions about the lawfulness of the attacks and the broader policy in the region, particularly toward Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro.

The lawmakers indicated they did not know whether the recent report was true, and some GOP senators were doubtful. Nevertheless, they stated the alleged attacking of individuals of an first missile strike posed serious concerns and merited further scrutiny.

White House and Pentagon Officials Reiterate Position

The White House weighed in after the commander-in-chief on Sunday vigorously supported Hegseth. “Secretary Hegseth said he did not order the death of those individuals,” Trump said. He continued, “And I trust him.”

Leavitt said Hegseth had spoken with congressional representatives who may have expressed some worries about the reports over the past few days.

General Dan Caine, the head of the military's top officers, also spoke over the weekend with the bipartisan leaders heading the Congressional military committees. He reiterated “his trust and confidence in the experienced officers at every echelon”, Caine’s office said in a statement.

The release further noted that the conversation focused on “addressing the purpose and legality of operations to disrupt illicit trafficking networks which endanger the security and security of the Americas”.

Congressional Leaders React and Pledge Investigation

The Senate majority leader, John Thune, on Monday broadly defended the operations, repeating the administration position that they were essential to stem the influx of illegal narcotics into the US.

Thune stated the panels in Congress would look into what happened. “I don’t think you want to make any conclusions or deductions until you have complete information,” he said of the September 2nd attack. “We’ll see where they point.”

Following the report, Hegseth wrote on Friday that “fake news is producing more false, inflammatory, and derogatory reporting to undermine our remarkable service members fighting to protect the homeland”.

“Our current operations in the region are lawful under both American and global statutes, with every step in compliance with the law of armed conflict – and sanctioned by the best military and civilian lawyers, up and down the chain of command,” Hegseth stated.

The top Senate Democrat, Chuck Schumer, labeled Hegseth a “national embarrassment” over his response to detractors. Schumer called for that Hegseth make public the footage of the strike and appear under penalty of perjury about what transpired.

The Republican senator for the state of Mississippi, Roger Wicker, the ranking member of the Senate military panel, vowed that his committee's investigation would be “done by the numbers”.

“We’ll discover the ground truth,” he said, stating that the implications of the allegation were “serious charges”.

The 2 September strike was part of a sequence carried out by the US military in the Caribbean Sea and Pacific as Trump has ordered the deployment of a fleet of warships near the Venezuelan coast, including the largest US aircraft carrier. Over eighty individuals were fatally wounded in the strikes.
