Twelve months back, the environment was completely different. Ahead of the national election, reflective residents could recognize the country's deep flaws – its unfairness and disparity – yet they continued to perceive it as the United States. A free society. A place where constitutional order carried weight. A country headed by a dignified and ethical leader, despite his elderly years and increasing frailty.

Nowadays, this autumn, numerous citizens scarcely know the land we reside in. People alleged as undocumented migrants are collected and shoved into vehicles, occasionally denied due process. The left side of the White House – is being destroyed for an obscene event space. Donald Trump is targeting his political rivals or perceived antagonists and insisting the justice department surrender a huge total of citizen dollars. Armed military personnel are dispatched across metropolitan centers on false pretexts. The Pentagon, rebranded the Department of War, has practically rid itself of regular press examination while it uses what could amount to close to a trillion USD in public funds. Institutions, law firms, journalism organizations are submitting due to presidential intimidation, and billionaires are regarded as aristocracy.

“The US, just months before its 250-year mark as the planet's foremost free society, has tipped over the edge toward dictatorship and totalitarianism,” an American historian, wrote in August. “Ultimately, swifter than I imagined possible, it did happen in America.”

One awakes to new horrors. And it's difficult to grasp – and agonizing to acknowledge – how deeply lost we are, and how quickly it has happened.

Yet, we understand that the president was duly elected. Following his deeply disturbing first term and following the alerts associated with the understanding of Project 2025 – even after Trump himself stated openly he intended to rule as a tyrant solely at the start – a majority of citizens elected him over his Democratic opponent.

Frightening as today's circumstances is, it’s even scarier to understand that we’re only several months under this leadership. Where will another 36 months of this deterioration find us? And if that timeframe transforms into an prolonged era, because there is no one to stop this president from deciding that a third term is essential, perhaps for defense purposes?

Granted, there is still hope. We will have congressional elections in 2026 that could create a new political equilibrium, if Democrats retake the Senate or House of the legislature. There exist elected officials who are attempting to impose some accountability, such as Democratic congressmen who are starting a probe into the attempted cash appropriation from legal authorities.

And a national vote three years from now could begin our journey toward restoration precisely as the prior selection set us on this regrettable path.

We see numerous residents demonstrating in urban areas of their cities, as they did in the past days at democracy demonstrations.

Robert Reich, stated lately that “the great sleeping giant of America is stirring”, just as it did after the Communist witch-hunt era during the fifties or during anti-war demonstrations or throughout the Watergate scandal.

On those occasions, the listing ship ultimately corrected itself.

He claims he knows the signals of that awakening and sees it happening at present. As evidence, he points to the recent massive protests, the broad, bipartisan pushback to a broadcaster's firing and the near-unanimous rejection by reporters to agree to government requirements they solely cover approved content.

“The sleeping giant always remains dormant till some venality grows too toxic, some action so disrespectful of societal benefit, some brutality so loud, that it is compelled but to awaken.”

It's a positive outlook, and I respect Reich’s experienced view. Maybe he’ll be validated.

In the meantime, the crucial issues remain: can America ever recover? Can it reclaim its standing in the world and its adherence to legal principles?

Or must we acknowledge that the historical project succeeded temporarily, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My negative thoughts tells me that the final scenario is true; that everything might be finished. My hopeful heart, though, convinces me that we need to strive, by any means possible.

In my case, working in journalism analysis, that involves encouraging reporters to adhere, more completely, to their mission of overseeing leadership. For others, it may be participating in political races, or coordinating protests, or discovering methods to protect voting rights.

Not even one year prior, we existed in a very different place. In the future? Or after another term? The reality is, we are uncertain. The only option is try to not give up.
