Texas Attorney General Sues Tylenol Manufacturers Regarding Autism Spectrum Claims

Legal Proceedings
The Texas Attorney General, a Trump ally who is running for US Senate, claimed pharmaceutical manufacturers of hiding the risks of acetaminophen

Texas Attorney General Paxton is filing a lawsuit against the manufacturers of Tylenol, alleging the companies concealed alleged dangers that the drug posed to children's cognitive development.

This legal action comes four weeks after President Donald Trump publicized an unproven link between consuming acetaminophen - also known as acetaminophen - during pregnancy and autism in young ones.

Paxton is filing suit against J&J, which formerly manufactured the drug, the sole analgesic recommended for women during pregnancy, and the current manufacturer, which currently produces it.

In a statement, he stated they "misled consumers by gaining financially from discomfort and pushing pills regardless of the risks."

The manufacturer states there is insufficient reliable data tying Tylenol to autism spectrum disorder.

"These companies deceived for years, intentionally threatening millions to line their pockets," the attorney general, a Republican, said.

The company stated officially that it was "seriously troubled by the perpetuation of misinformation on the security of acetaminophen and the likely effects that could have on the well-being of women and children in America."

On its online platform, the company also mentioned it had "consistently assessed the relevant science and there is insufficient valid information that shows a proven link between consuming acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder."

Groups speaking for doctors and health professionals concur.

ACOG has said paracetamol - the main ingredient in Tylenol - is one of the few options for expectant mothers to manage discomfort and fever, which can create major wellness concerns if ignored.

"In multiple decades of research on the utilization of acetaminophen in pregnancy, zero credible investigations has successfully concluded that the consumption of acetaminophen in any stage of gestation causes brain development issues in offspring," the association stated.

The court filing references recent announcements from the previous government in asserting the drug is potentially dangerous.

In recent weeks, the former president caused concern from medical authorities when he instructed pregnant women to "fight like hell" not to use acetaminophen when unwell.

The FDA then released a statement that doctors should consider limiting the consumption of Tylenol, while also mentioning that "a direct connection" between the drug and autism in young ones has remains unverified.

Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, who supervises the FDA, had vowed in spring to undertake "a massive testing and research effort" that would identify the origin of autism spectrum disorder in a matter of months.

But authorities advised that identifying a sole reason of autism - believed by scientists to be the consequence of a complicated interplay of inherited and external influences - would be difficult.

Autism is a type of permanent neurological difference and impairment that impacts how people perceive and engage with the world, and is identified using doctors' observations.

In his legal document, the attorney general - aligned with the former president who is campaigning for US Senate - alleges the manufacturer and J&J "intentionally overlooked and tried to quiet the research" around acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder.

The case attempts to require the companies "eliminate any commercial messaging" that states acetaminophen is safe for pregnant women.

This legal action echoes the complaints of a group of guardians of young ones with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who sued the manufacturers of acetaminophen in recently.

Judicial authorities threw out the lawsuit, declaring studies from the parents' expert witnesses was lacking definitive proof.
