Japan's Economic Output Contracts as Exports Are Hit by US Trade Duties
Japan's economy has recorded a decline for the initial time in a year and a half, primarily caused by falling overseas shipments because of recent US trade duties.

Japan has become the initial Group of Seven country to disclose an output shrinkage in the previous quarter.

Travel Stocks Decline amid Diplomatic Dispute with China
In addition to the economic contraction, Japan is dealing with an growing diplomatic tension with China regarding Taiwan.
Stocks in Japan's travel and consumer businesses have fallen sharply after China recommended its residents to refrain from traveling to Japan.
This move by Beijing intensified a diplomatic feud that was triggered by comments from Japan's recently appointed prime minister about the possibility of sending troops in the case of a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan.
The development caused a wave of selling across Japanese tourism-related stocks.
- The Tokyo Disneyland operator stock fell by 5.7 percent
- Isetan Mitsukoshi tumbled by 11.3%
- The national carrier declined by 3.75%
"The China-Japan tension over Taiwan and Beijing's travel warning advising against travel to Japan creates near-term challenges for retail and hospitality sectors.
"Chinese visitors account for roughly 25% of Japan's international visitors, making department stores, luxury retail, and hospitality particularly at risk."
Economic Decline Details
Japan's gross domestic product fell by 0.4 percent in the third quarter, as manufacturers' exports were hit by duties levied by the United States this year.
Exports were a major factor of the contraction, dropping by 1.2 percent compared with the April-June quarter, and were 4.5 percent lower than a year ago.
Previously, the American government had proposed Japan with a new 25% tariff on its goods, which was later reduced to 15% when the two nations reached a trade agreement.
Consumer spending also fell, by 0.3% quarter-on-quarter.
On an annualized basis, Japan's real gross domestic product contracted by 1.8 percent in the quarter through September.
"Japan's economy was strong in the initial six months of this year and today's GDP data showed that momentum is halted for now.
I anticipate Japan's economy to be back on a gradual recovery trend going forward."
The White House has recently recognized the impact of tariffs on US consumers, lowering tariffs on food imports including meat, tomatoes, coffee and fruits amid increasing concerns about increasing costs.
