American flight controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and calling in sick, as they remain on duty without pay amid the government shutdown, the transport chief has stated.

"These professionals are becoming strained," Sean Duffy told Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were halted on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

After the government shut down on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were instructed to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been absent, leading airports to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has added to setbacks due to climate and additional factors.

Over three thousand American flights were delayed on Sunday, and Duffy said he expects the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy remarked in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to hear their worries firsthand.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, can I find an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he continued.

The secretary added that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airfields said flights would be delayed due to a lack of employees - among the peak after the shutdown started.

The American federal closure entered its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, making it the second most extended halt in the past.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would reduce the quantity of aircraft in the sky if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his interview, he declined to respond directly when questioned if it was secure to fly in the US, and instead made a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my staff concentrating on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at their households," Duffy said.

On Sunday, certain flights were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, causing disruption at the fifth most active airport in the country and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as additional travel stretching north to the metropolis of Oakland, California.

The FAA alert was issued at 8:45 AM local time on the weekend. Many flights were operating normally by midday.

Flights at Newark Airport, however, were delayed an average of 82 minutes due to personnel issues, and the authority said DFW, the second most active airport in the country, could experience problems from low staffing later in the day.

The FAA warned passengers in California to check with carriers about revised departure times.

The situation precedes Game 3 of the World Series, which is scheduled in LA on Monday night, and approximately four weeks before the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest periods to fly in the US.

Strain on American aviation helped end a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the halt had reached its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including pilot training.

It led a number of flight controllers to remain absent on the identical date on January 25, 2019, temporarily stopping travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

On that date, the former president, who at the time was in his first term as president, agreed to sign a temporary funding measure, effectively ending the federal closure after 35 days.
