Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood has unveiled what is being called the largest reforms to address unauthorized immigration "in modern times".

The new plan, inspired by the tougher stance adopted by Denmark's centre-left government, renders refugee status temporary, limits the review procedure and threatens visa bans on nations that refuse repatriation.

Temporary Asylum Approvals

People granted asylum in the UK will only be allowed to reside in the country for limited periods, with their case evaluated at two-and-a-half-year intervals.

This means people could be repatriated to their native land if it is deemed "safe".

The system echoes the method in the Scandinavian country, where asylum seekers get two-year permits and must request extensions when they end.

Officials claims it has already started supporting people to return to Syria by choice, following the removal of the Assad regime.

It will now investigate mandatory repatriation to that country and other states where people have not regularly been deported to in recent years.

Refugees will also need to be settled in the UK for twenty years before they can request permanent residence - raised from the present half-decade.
