Elections are now in progress for parliamentary elections in Holland, with recent surveys suggesting that the far-right firebrand Geert Wilders and his Freedom party (PVV) may repeat their emerge victorious, although experts suggest the party is unlikely of joining the next government.

Polling Trends and Election Dynamics

Wilders' party, which in the last election pulled off a surprise first-place finish and formed a four-party all-conservative government that collapsed within a year, is currently slightly leading in the polls and is projected to win between 24 and 28 seats in the 150-member house of representatives.

However, PVV's popularity has dipped since 2023, when it secured 37 parliamentary seats. Every significant political group have stated they will not forming a government with the PVV leader, and who triggered the fall of the previous government in the summer amid disagreements concerning his radical anti-refugee plans.

Key Contenders and Projections

Following a campaign focused on issues such as immigration, medical expenses, and the country's severe housing shortage, the left-leaning Green Left/Labour party alliance, led by former European commissioner Frans Timmermans, is running a near second, expected to win between 22 to 26 seats.

Also forecast to do well is the liberal-progressive Democrats 66, predicted to boost its representation by almost five times to 21 to 25 seats, while the right-leaning CDA is expected to significantly increase its number of MPs to between 18 to 22.

The outgoing cabinet members – which included the PVV, liberal-conservative VVD, populist Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB), and NSC – are all projected to lose seats, with several facing heavy losses.

Electoral System and Fragmentation

In the proportional Dutch system, securing just less than one percent of the vote earns a party one MP. Among the two dozen political groups participating in the vote – including senior-focused parties, youth parties, animal rights parties, for a universal basic income, and sports parties – as many as 16 may gain entry to parliament.

This significant division means that no single party is ever likely to secure a majority, and the Netherlands has been governed by coalitions – typically composed of several groups in recent governments – for over 100 years.

Post-Election Scenarios

Wilders has stated that "the democratic process would end" in the Netherlands if the PVV ends up as the biggest group yet is shut out of government. However, opponents and experts say that winning the most seats does not assure a role in the coalition and that any coalition with a parliamentary majority is a democratic outcome.

Although the final outcome is hard to predict and government negotiations could take several months, analysts indicate that following the most extreme government in its recent history, the future government is likely to be a inclusive alliance led by either the moderate left or moderate right.

Voting Process

Voting locations, including those in the Madurodam model village in The Hague and the Anne Frank house in the capital city, opened at 7:30 AM (6.30am GMT) and will conclude at 9pm. A usually accurate exit poll is expected shortly after the polls close.

After the vote, an informateur will explore potential governing alliances that could command a majority in the legislature. Prospective coalition members will then draft a governing pact for the coming term and must undergo a confidence vote in the house before assuming power.
