Balancing my Desire for Casual Encounters While Pursuing a Meaningful Relationship
As a gay man in my late 40s, my life has involved many, largely pleasurable years pursuing casual sex with other men since the age of 19. In my 30s, I was in a serious relationship which continued for four years, but I never felt completely content, in that I felt neither loved nor sexually nourished. Truthfully, my constant desire has been for uncommitted intimacy. Whenever I start to date a potential partner, when the initial excitement dwindles, I always get the urge to be intimate with new partners again.
Reflecting on the Feasibility of Exclusive Commitment
Currently, I'm contemplating if I’ll ever be able to maintain a monogamous relationship. I understand that numerous gay men have non-monogamous arrangements, yet when I’ve witnessed them, they appear demanding, often resulting in lots of pain and jealousy among all parties. To a large extent, I want a partner to care for me while letting me pursue other intimacies, however I dread to imagine the emotional drain this might create. Should I just keep having spontaneous encounters and acknowledge that a lasting partnership is not possible? I’m feeling a bit lost.
Every person’s intimate path varies. Try not to think of your relationship needs or your capacity to tolerate various forms of sexual unions in a finite way. What you need in your current state could easily shift in the future; eventually you may find yourself more decisive and find greater understanding and a comfortable path … or perhaps not. One day you could encounter someone offering a life-changing chance to you by reflecting what you want completely … and at another point you might decide that casual connections suit you best. Worrying about what lies ahead and playing endless speculation is simply anxiety-based and squandering of your energy. Try to be in the moment in your relationships, and see the worth of each person you connect with intimately an intimate bond. If and when the time is right to deepen true intimacy with one partner, it will be clear.
