T forced its way through wall after wall of freezing rain on its descent into its destination. A sinking feeling filled me during the journey, growing stronger as I shuffled through the arrivals hall. I felt bitter over returning to the place where I had grown up, after residing on the opposite end of the world for what had felt like a an eternity.

After a couple of days, I went out to get a my hair cut. My thoughts was distant, lingering over an ocean, when I was startled by something hit the pavement. I glanced down to see a bird on its wings, sprawled, and convulsing.

The crash occurred just as kids were filing out from the local elementary school and so within moments a little crowd of youngsters had gathered, flanked by their mothers and fathers. This group of puzzled faces stared down at the bird, uncertain what to say or do. The kids were more decisive: “Papa, she needs hospital, can we call an ambulance?” I took off my anorak, bent down and gently lifted the pigeon into it. “No problem, sweet, the nice man will help her!” remarked one parent with a audible relief. I had turned into the emergency transport for this pigeon that had just landed abruptly, unintentionally, as I had a short time earlier.

I trudged home, arms stiffly extended, with the bird tucked safely inside the jacket.

I had no idea that my on-the-spot decision to medivac Belinda (the name I bestowed upon my avian patient) would direct me to a web of Mancunians giving up significant amounts of their time to provide not only rescue services for feral pigeons but scans, respite care, and even “bird rehabilitation”.

I retrieved a cardboard box for Belinda, placed inside it with an old T-shirt, and put her inside. Every half hour or so, I’d lift the lid just long enough for us to share a momentary glance.

Those instances of common perplexity interrupted my frantic search for what to do from there. I called friends for suggestions and one suggested trying social media, where, to my amazement, I stumbled upon a local pigeon rescue group, and submitted a request to participate.

A Grassroots Network

Over 3,000-strong, the group has an anarchic model: someone in Manchester discovers an ailing pigeon, a urgent post is made, then a comment section “assessment” takes place. If the bird is judged in need of an X-ray, someone with a vet link can organize it; if it needs physio, a “rehabilitator” will step forward to care for the bird.

Volunteers each have their own carefully cultivated skills, whether it’s mending broken wings or cleaning wounds. Their significant, cooperative effort for the pigeons of the city is powered solely by goodwill.

Belinda was quickly diagnosed with brain trauma, likely a blow to the head, and placed with a rehabber who would give pain relief and a program of patient physio. We never found out exactly what caused her to drop from above. I assumed the role of avian courier once more, boarding the streetcar across the city with Belinda in a shoebox on my lap so she could get the care she needed.

Rediscovering Home

After discovering this secret pigeon “NHS”, I began to feel much more positive about being back in my city. I question any of the places I had called home while away could claim anything even close. It also occurred to me that this was not the first time I’d been part of a pigeon aid mission: almost 20 years earlier I’d witnessed one fall from the sky into the schoolyard of my high school. Again, children circled the bird, but only one – my closest friend at the time – had the nerve to pick it up and take it to safety.

The aforementioned friend has since passed away – one of a number of companions to die in the years before my departure from Manchester. I understood that this had been a significant factor of what had made coming back so hard.

Feathered Support

Pigeons have a history as “therapy” animals, especially in the north of England. Miners started to raise the birds because they gave them solace and an reason to gaze up at the sky between long shifts of subterranean gloom. During the Depression, workers on the unemployment also found comfort in pigeons, but keeping them was viewed as a sign of “idleness”.

Nowadays, pigeons are often disparaged as stupid, dirty or a annoyance. Before finding the rehab group, I had spoken to a animal doctor, who told me: “if you bring it here, leave it in the lot and we’ll end its life.”

Each happy sound, often elicited by her favourite treat, peas, feels like a example in perseverance and strength – and I am eternally thankful to her for showing me a new dimension to the city I was familiar with.
